Character Name: Inara Serra
Occupation: Companion
Canon History for the Character: Inara Serra was born on the core planet Sihnon. Her family was upper middle class, and when Inara passed her examinations, her parents were delighted to send her to the companion's guild academy. To them, their daughter was moving into upper nobility. At the Guild temple, Inara excelled in her training (though she was admittedly slow to learn languages and music) and particularly enjoyed dance and movement exercises such as kata with swords and archery.
Inara quickly rose in the ranks of the Companion Guild, earning notoriety as one of the most poised and dignified (and sought after) companions. She lived a life of decadence and finery and became one of the youngest candidates for the rank of High Priestess of The Guild. It was during the in depth medical screening required for the additional rank that Inara discovered she had a rare type of genetically triggered virus. It was thought to have mutated out of human genetics long ago, and only those with the right mix of recessive genes would be susceptible. Inara was told that there was no cure, and in time, as the virus corrupted more and more of her bodies' healthy cells, she would start to suffer the effects of the virus. Told she would be faced with a shortened life span filled with pain and eventual loss of motor function, Inara stepped down from her position with the guild.
Inara decided to see the universe in an attempt to find enlightenment before her death. She traveled around the inner core planets, but being a Buddist, Inara knew she couldn't truly understand the universe (And, in turn, why she was made to suffer in it) without seeing the dirty outlaying bits of the verse. She chartered an agreement with the captain of the first ship bound for the outer planets she came across. She had initially planned to look longer, but Captain Reynolds was… well… handsome, and she could tell that deep down he was a good man. Inara would pay rent for the use of one of Serenity's shuttles, which would be her home and soley her domain, and in return, Inara's status as a well sought after Companion would gain Serenity landing clearance in ports that might otherwise deny or over charge port fees.
After a year and a half with the crew of Serenity, Inara found herself at home. The crew had become her family, and she knew she couldn't stay. She knew eventually she would hurt them all by leaving, and she'd rather leave on her own terms.
